Learning Commons Introduction Spiel Flashcards
Introduction
Hello everyone. My name is Ben Reitz, and I’m…
…the College Prep Zone tutoring coordinator for RRCC Learning Commons and tutoring department.
As __________ mentioned, I am here to discuss a bit about the Learning Commons, and the tutoring services we provide for students here at Red Rocks!
What and Where is the Learning Commons?
The Learning Commons is…
…a comfortable and friendly tutoring and study environment. The Lakewood Campus Learning Commons is the main tutoring space we provide - it is located at the top of the spiral stairs in the East wing, right across from the library.
Our department offers many helpful resources…
…for those who pursue their higher education as Red Rocks students:
We have lots of computers with class-relevant software;
We even have student assistants whose job is to help students navigate our technology.
Both our temporary locations and The Learning Commons area contain many quiet, clean and comfortable places to study.
Students can come to study alone and find other spots for study in groups.
We offer Test Reviews…
…in some of our tutoring labs for major exams in certain classes, all led by qualified tutors with free snacks provided (what more could you want?)
And of course we have our main resource…
Tutoring, itself!
We offer tutoring a variety of formats…
We have in-person tutoring of all kinds, and 3 different options for virtual tutoring…
We have tutoring that works on a walk-in basis and tutoring that operates by appointment, depending on which services a student uses…
And of course, tutoring is absolutely free to all students enrolled here at Red Rocks!
Our tutoring comes not just in a variety of formats, but also for a variety of subjects…
We have tutoring for the heavily trafficked disciplines like Math and English, of course, but also…
…one-on-one tutoring in specialized subjects like the sciences, accounting and programming.
For the more often-requested subjects, we have a number of dedicated tutoring labs…
…some of the labs are housed in the Learning Commons area and others can be found elsewhere on campus.
Embedded in the Learning Commons, we have…
The College Prep Zone, for serving students enrolled in college preparatory Math/English classes (classes beginning with a zero in the course number)… (naturally, I always like to brag on the CPZ, since that’s the tutoring lab I happen to coordinate). This is also the lab through which we do our test review sessions.
The Math Lab, which is our most heavily trafficked center, by far (as I’m sure many of you can imagine)…they assist with all math classes from the 1000 course level up through differential equations and applied linear algebra
And a world language lab, which currently offers ESL and Japanese tutoring.
Elsewhere on campus, you’ll find…
The Writing Center, which can help with any phase of any writing assignment in any writing discipline (not just English), the Comm Lab, which assists with speech and presentation prep, the Engineering Graphics Technology Lab for drafting sciences, and the Visual Audio Media Arts Lab for graphic design.
I could go on and on (I won’t), but…
…instead, I’ll encourage you to come check out our many services for yourself!
As a quick closing note, we know that there is often a lot of stigma surrounding tutoring. People often think that its just for those who are underperforming in class and so they need extra help.
But actually, tutoring is a wonderful resource, and not just for those struggling. Many students regularly visit us simply because they hope to maintain the success they have already established with their coursework early on.
So just an important closing note: there is never any reason to feel intimidated by the prospect of seeking a tutor, especially not at Red Rocks!
That will do it for me…do come chat with me if you have any questions or…
…if you would just like to introduce yourself or grab some Learning Commons promotional materials and other information.
Thank you and we’ll hope to see you as you come to visit with a tutor in the weeks ahead.
