Learning Approach: Social Learning Theory Flashcards
How can we gain new behaviours?
Through observing and imitating others
What did Bandura do?
Conducted an experience which involved children observing an aggressive or non aggressive act performed by adult role models
What did the children observe?
- Half: observed adults acting aggressive
- Half: observed adults being non aggressive
What happened after the children observed the adults?
They were shown attractive toys which they were not allowed to play with, then they were able to play with more ordinary toys and the bobo doll
What did Bandura find in the Bobo doll test?
A large proportion of the children who had watched the aggressive role model reproduced physically aggressive behaviour that had been demonstrated
What happened to the non aggressive condition?
They showed virtually no aggression toward the Bobo doll
What is modelling?
Someone who carries out an attitude or behaviour so it can be observed and learned
What is imitation?
Parents model attitudes and behaviours and then children copy/imitate it
What are 3 key factors which determine if we will imitate behaviour?
- Characteristics of the model (male/female)
- Observers perished ability to perform that behaviour
- Consequences of the behaviour
What is identification?
The extent to which the observer can relate to the model and feels similar to that person
What is vicarious reinforcement?
We learn about the consequence of an action and then alter our own behaviour based upon the outcomes for the individual we have observed
What are mediational processes?
Mental factors involved in learning mediate in the learning process to determine whether a new response is aquired
What are the 4 mediational processes?
- Attention
- Retention
- Reproduction
- Motivation
What is attention?
How much we notice certain behaviours
What is retention?
How well we remember the behaviour
