Learning and Behavioral Modification Flashcards
What is the illness model?
People anthropomorphizing animals and their illness, isn’t very good
What does appetitive mean?
Good stimulus
What does adverse mean?
Bad stimulus
What is positive reinforcement?
Good behavior receives appetitive stimulus
What is positive punishment?
Bad behavior receives adverse stimulus
What is negative reinforcement?
Good behavior prevents adverse stimulus
What is negative punishment?
Bad behavior prevents appetitive stimulus
What is habituation?
Over time repeated exposure to stimuli results in a smaller or non existent response to the stimuli
What is structural habituation?
Using habituation to desensitize a dog
What is flooding?
Providing the desensitized stimuli at full strength
What is operant conditioning?
Doing something on purpose in response to stimuli
What is a reinforcer?
The reward of operative conditioning
What is classical conditioning?
The involuntary response to a certain stimulus
What is unconditioned?
The animal has not been taught to have this response
What is conditioned?
The animal has been taught to have this response
What is interactive punishment?
Pet associates unpleasant stimuli with owner
What is remote punishment?
No association of punishment (adverse stimuli) with owner, like a shock collar
What is systemic desensitization?
Gradual increasing of anxiety inducing stimuli
What is extinction?
A conditioned stimulus is provided without providing the unconditioned stimulus after
What is counterconditioning?
Establishing an appetitive stimuli when an adverse stimuli takes place. Ex. giving a treat when loud noise happens
What is stereotypic behavior?
Behaviors that are abnormal and provide no benefit to the animal. Like OCD in humans
What is Acral Lick Dermatitis?
A stereotypic behavior in dogs that involves excess licking that can lead to extreme wounds
What is psychogenic alopecia?
Cats excessively grooming
What is pica?
Cats ingesting wool
