What is a companion animal?
An animal with whom one spends a lot of time or with whom one travels
What are the needs that should be met in order for an animal to be a companion animal?
Its Physical, Emotional and Behavioral needs must be met
What is a dynamic relationship between humans and animals?
A mutually beneficial relationship that can also create negative consequences for both
What is Inductive Theory?
A data base is generated from related studies and is formed into “general relationships” that are used to develop new theoretical principles
What is Deductive Theory?
Observations that generate new research. These new observations test any previous theories and if the data does not support the original theory it is modified
What is Functional Theory?
A combination of Deductive and Inductive Theory
What is Model Theory?
Observations from one field are analogous with some “other” concept in another field. For example comparing eyes to cameras
What is Biophilia?
The human tendency to affiliate with life (animals and natures)
What are the assertions of biophilia?
- Biophilia is inherent (biological) and apart of the evolutionary process 2. Provides Competitive Advantages 3. Provides meaning and fulfillment 4. Helps maintain nature and biodiversity
What is Self Psychology?
A psychoanalytical theory that focuses on self and self objects

An object (things, people, experiences, ideas, etc.) that maintains the idea of self. To be considered a Self object it must modify or maintain the inner experience of self

Provides Self with recognition, affirmation and confirmation, in the context of goodness, grandness and wholeness

An admired and respected Self Object, a wise, powerful protector

What are Animal Hoarders? What are some habits of Animal Hoarders?
- They accumulate large numbers of animals and obsessively try to obtain more animals even as their household deteriorates 2. They fail to provide nutrition, sanitation or veterinary care. They deny the poor living conditions and the effect it has on the animals and people in the household 3. Treat their pets as surrogate children and believe no one else can care for the pet 4. They are scared their animals will be euthanized
What are some demographics of hoarders?
Middle-age or older woman, can be retired, unemployed or disabled
What is the link between Animal Abuse and violence?
It has been found that many people violent later in life (serial killers for example) abused animals as children. Animal abuse can also be a sign of family violence or problems
