Why is it important to consider the needs of a carer of an elderly person? E.g. partner or child?
They know the service user better than anyone else
They can advocate for them and have their best interests at heart
They might have needs of their own e.g. if they have given up work to care for an individual they are entitled to financial support
How can an elderly person be supported to live independently?
Adaptations to the home
Meals on wheels (provided by a private organisation or the local authority
Befriending service e.g. through Age UK
What are the benefits of an elderly person continuing to live at home?
Empowerment and independence for the individual
No bed blocking in hospitals
No risk of picking up infections from a long hospital stay
What is the purpose of having policies and procedures in place?
Protects service users
Protects staff
How do policies and procedures protect staff?
They are working to guidelines that are in place to keep them safe at work e.g. manual handling, infection control
Protected if something goes wrong-if they have followed procedure then they have done the right thing
How do policies and procedures protect service users?
Ensures that staff are working together to a high standard-they will be following the most up to date guidelines and legislation
Poor practice will always be investigated e.g. through whistleblowing
