Learning 1 Flashcards
Define Learing
An action, or pattern of actions, which result from interactions between genes, the environment and experience
Psychology vs Ethology
psychology is the study of mind - how does it work
ethology is biological study of behaviour - what is this behaviour for
what are the two drivers behaviour is motivated by
positive driver - rewards/pleasure seeking
negative driver - pain, anxiety, fear/avoidance
what is learning a form of
cognition and involves/motivated by emotion
Define Stimuli
a quanta of information that are sensed by the animal and cause a response
response can be immediate or learning behaviour or both
external and internal
non-associative learning
instances in which an animals behaviour towards a stimuli changes in the absence of an apparent event (reward or punishment)
(imprinting, habituation, sensitisation and desensitisation)
Imprinting
relatively permanent, rapid, learning during a particular sensitive period
(e.g. ducks following parent)
Habituation
A decrease (or cessation) in response following repeated exposure to the stimulus
(e.g. bomb-proofing a horse)
Sensitisation
An increase in response following repeated exposure to the stimulus
(e.g. loud noises for a dog)
above fear thresh-hold
Desensitisation
A decrease of a previously sensitised response following repeated exposure to the stimulus
(similar to habituation, but to a previously sensitised stimulus)
