Learned behaviour Flashcards
What is behavioural adaptation?
Adaptation which affects the way an animal behaves
What can behavioural adaptation be?
Innate or learned
What will behavioural adaptation do?
Increase the survival chances of the animal
Give examples of behavioural adaptation
Newly hatched turtles will instinctively head towards the sea
Is learned behaviour carried out by all members of the species?
No, only those with experience
What is stimulus?
Something that triggers a response in an organism
What can stimulus influence?
Behaviour
Give examples of internal stimuli (3)
Hunger, thirst, aches
Give examples of external stimuli (3)
Day length, temp, dry/wet conditions
What does the ability to learn help do?
An organism to survive
What are the three types of learned behaviour?
Habituation, imprinting and associative learning
When does habituation happen?
When an animal learns to stop responding to a repeated harmless stimulus to save energy
What is imprinting?
Newly hatched ducklings + geese will follow their mother to the water away from predators and towards food
What does imprinting do?
Helps the animal to survive
What is associated learning?
Bees can be trained to associate colour with food
