Adaptations Flashcards
What is evolution?
A process where a species changes over time in order to become better adapted to their environment
What makes a successful species?
Members of the same species must live long enough to reproduce
What happen to species that are less well adapted?
Decrease in members and may become extinct
What are adaptations?
Any feature that makes an individual well suited to their environment, helping them to survive
What are the 3 types of adaptations?
Behavioural, structural and physiological
What is structural adaptation?
How the body of an organism is suited to its environment
What do structural adaptations affect?
The way an organism looks
Give an example of a structural adaptation PB
Small features to reduce heat loss
Black skin to absorb heat
White fur to camouflage
Layer of fat to insulate and keep warm
Thick, padded paws to walk on ice
Give an example of structural adaptation G
Camouflaged coat to help hide long legs
Long neck to reach leaves high up on trees that aren’t grazed by other herbivores
Give an example of structural adaptation T
Stripes to camouflage in grass, helps survival chances as they can stalk prey unseen
Sharp/long teeth + claws to capture and eat large prey
Give an example of structural adaptation, cactus
Spines (well adapted leaves) to protect from grazers and to reduce water loss
Stems made of succulent tissue that expand + store large volumes of water that allows it to survive periods of drought
Wide + shallow roots to collect surface water
What is a physiological adaptation?
Adaptation which involves internal processes within the plant or animal
Give an example of a physiological adaptation Pineapple
Close pores on leaves surface during the day to reduce water loss and prevents Co2 needed for photosynthesis from entering the leaves
Collect Co2 at night & store it until needed during the day
Give an example of a physiological adaptive peng
Capable of storing large quantities of O2, allows peng to hold breath for up to 22m allowing it to exploit food sources that other species can’t reach allowing peng to survive in areas with high comp for food
What is a behavioural adaptation?
Either built in or learned and will increase the survival chances. Affects the way an animal behaves
