What were the aims of the League of Nations?
To make the world a better place by improving working conditions, to settle disputes between countries, encourage countries to get rid of their weapons and tackle deadly diseases.
What was the assembly?
A meeting of all nations in the league that would meet once a year. The countries would all get an equal vote to pass a decision. All decisions had to be unanimous.
Who were the permanent members of the council?
Britain, France Italy and Japan.
Who couldn’t join the league at first?
Losing countries in world war 1 couldn’t join the league. Germany and Austria for example.
Also Russia due to it communist government nit being recognised could not join at first, they eventually could join in 1934.
What was the secretariat?
The civil service if the league, that was In charge of organising any action the league wanted to take.
Special commissions?
These were special groups that were put together to tackle issues the league was worried about. Some included the international labour organisation, the health organisation and the slavery organisation.
Strengths of the league?
It had a vast membership, and good aims that all counties could want.
It’s numerous members meant that sanctions and moral condemnation were seen as great threats.
What were weaknesses of the league?
Many countries did not join, for example the USA, undermining the idea of the league being a global organisation, and also meaning if sanctions were imposed countries could still trade with the USA.
Decision making, due to the unanimous decision rule was slow, and the structure was complicated.
Also the league had no army, so it could not enforce its decisions.
