what was the aim of the league
a world parliament- countries world disarm and would go to the league if they had a dispute. improve living and working conditions, discourage agression.
what was an initial setback for the league
wilson needed approval from his congress, it was not popular. people feared soldiers lives would be in danger, many had german ancestors therefore hated the treaty. usa did not join the league.
When was corfu and why is it important
1923- mussolini demanded greek goverment pay compensation for death of italian men. they refused and mussolini bombed them. league condemned mussolini and told greek to pay but the league would keep the money until killers were found. l of n undermined as mussolini said l of n were incompetent therefore league of ambassadors had to deal with it. council overuled and greek made to pay compensation.
when was bulgaria and why is it important
1925- greek invaded bulgaria, where greek soldiers were killed. league observed and made greek pay 45,000 compensations. Success for L of N
how did the league work for a better world
refugees- league got them back to their homelands
working conditions- league had a ban of amount of work in a week.
how succesful were league in 1920
failed in disarmament. daws plan -1924 helped german economy.
league were able to help in small things such as helping refugees, working conditions etc. yet were undermined in bigger things eg corfu.
when was the first japanese invasion of manchuria and what do china do
1931- china appeals to the league. league investigates, japan acted unlawfully manchuria should be returned to china
when was 2nd invasion of manchuria and what happened next
1933- japan announced they were to invade more of china. the league were unable to do anything without usa.
what were consequences of manchuria criscis
excuses were japan was to far away. shows critics that league was powerless against a strong nation. this incident caught hitler and mussolini interest.
why did disarment fail in 1930
disarment conference 1932- they said they would stop bombing, tanks etc but did not say how. Germany demanded to be treated equally. league refused to disarm to their level, therefore germany started to rearm.
how did mussolini invasion of manchuria damage the league
not taken seriously at first as mussolini ally against hitler. 8 months later league proposed plan that mussolini could have some of abysinnia, he refused. undermined the league, it is powerless
what did mussolini do after rejecting leagues proposal
launched full scale invasion of abysinnia . league banned arms sales to italy, banned loans, imports and export. league did not ban oil as it would lose jobs in britain. league did not close canal which would have stopped the criscis, as scared of resulting in war,
what was the hoare laval pact
1935- aim to give mussolini two thirds of abysinnia if he called off invasion. they were going to show mussolini before rest of the league. got leaked seen as treachery. slowed down process of banning oil, meaning mussolini took over more of abysinnia.
when did hitler invade the rhineland and what were consequences of this
march 1936- prohibited under treaty of versailles. italy taken control of abysinnia. league did nothing 1936 hitler and mussolini signed rome berlin pact.
