Leaf Structure And Function Flashcards
Cuticle
waxy coating on outside of leaf produced by the epidermis to protect from pathogens (bacteria and fungi) and prevents water loss. On both the upper and lower sides of the leaf.
Epidermis upper
Epidermis (upper) – single layer of cells with no chloroplasts. Allows light to pass through.
Mesophyll cells - palisade
Mesophyll cells (palisade) – contains chloroplast that do most of the photosynthesis.
Mesophyll cells - spongy layer
Mesophyll cells (spongy layer) – loosely packed cells with air space to allow movement of Co₂, O₂ and H₂O vapour. Also contains chloroplasts.
Epidermis lower
Epidermis (lower) – like the upper layer, contains no chloroplasts. Contains stomata (stoma singular). Note these can also be found in the upper epidermis of some species.
Stomata
Stomata – small pores or holes formed by two kidneys shaped guard cells, which also contain chloroplasts. The guard cells open and close the stoma to allow the diffusion of Co₂, O₂ and H₂O vapour.
Stomata in singular form
