Small leaf-like structures that may/may not be found at base of petiole.
Stipules
Leaves may be called:
Petiolate or sessile
Simple leaf
Each single blade has a bud in its axil and is a true leaf
Compound leaf
Composed of 2 or more leaflets. These may be distinguished from true leaves by the absence of a bud in the axil.
Palmately lobed leaf
All coming from the same point.
Pinnately lobed leaf
Lobes all join to a central line, not a single point.
Trifoliate leaf
3-lobed palmate arrangement
Bipinnate
Lobes join to a number of branches from a central line.
Opposite leaf arrangement
2 at each node
Decussate leaf arrangement
2 at each node, placed at right angles to pair below
Alternate leaf arrangement
1 leaf attached at each node; the location of the node on the stem usually follows a spiral
Whorled leaf arrangement
3 or more at each node
Basal rosette leaf arrangement
No stem; connect to base of plant
