Q

Explain how you applied the democratic leadership style on W&C

A

I chose to apply democratic leadership styles in the instance of Level 2 design issues because I believed it to lead to higher levels of accountability and teamwork. ‘Best endeavours’ to facilitate methods of tackling issues. Learnt how to balance being assertive/autocratic when deliverables were not actioned on time.

12
Q

What was the cause of the design issues?

A

A great deal of Stage 4 design information was not released until January 2024 when construction was due to start in October 2023.

For example, reflected ceiling plans were late and this should have been central to the 3D MEP modelling and coordination.

Q

What did you hope to achieve from the weekly workshops?

A

Whilst the contract was not D&B, it was important that I offered a quality service and harnessed the expertise of my supply chain. I wanted to collaborate and assign responsibilities that aligned with my programme.

Q

Can you give an example of when you had to use an autocratic approach?

A

Level 2 design freeze. Refusing client change and insisting this is part of Day 2 (post-PC works)

16
Q

Explain the key differences between your actions and conversations when using the democratic and autocratic styles

A

Democratic -

Faster decisions with no opposition, in control, directive, disempowerment/laziness.

Autocratic -

Wider input in decision making process, creates a sense of inclusion and influence, takes more time

17
Q

Why did you consider that an in-person meeting was best for the conversation on drylining subcontractor progress concerns?

A

I believed that it was important for the subcontractor to inspect the works and understand the issue fully.

18
Q

What information did you prepare to support your suggestion that they were in delay?

A
  • Programme dropline
  • Marked up drawing
  • Labour histogram and working hours
