Paternalistic
Broadly autocratic but takes the interests of workers into account. Consults junior employees, however they regain control and only delegate minor decisions. Regard staff as an extended family, having a duty of care.
Autocratic
Gives little freedom to junior employees. Downward communication. Allocates tasks and demand that subordinates act on their decisions.
Democratic
A broad ranging term covering a range of leadership styles. Delegates some decision making to subordinates. Encourages junior employees to express views and ideas. Effective communication up and down the organisational structure.
Participative
A style which business leaders fully involve one or more employees. Gives employees a high degree of control.
Laissez-faire
Literally means “leave alone.” Leaders have a relatively small say in the management. Subordinates are empowered to make the decisions.
