How are leaders chosen?
prescribed leader - chosen from outside group
emergent leader - selected from within the group as they are nominated by group members
What are the 3 leadership styles?
autocratic, democratic and laissez faire
What is the trait approach of leadership?
leaders are born with necessary characteristics to become a great leader. The characteristics are innate, stable, enduring and shown by males.
Explain the social learning theory of leadership?
leaders are not born with the skills but develop them through imitating and observing other successful leaders and learn through their experiences.
Explain the interactionist approach of leadership?
combination of trait and social learning theory. Leaders are born but develop through learning from others
According to Chelladurai’s multidimensional model of leadership what initial three factors must a leader consider?
the situation (who they are playing or possible danger), the group they are leading and the leader’s own characteristics, ability and preferred leadership style
What behaviours must a leader consider?
required behaviour for the situation and the preferred behaviour of the group which both effect the actual behaviour of the leader (what style they use)
Characteristics of an autocratic leader and when would it be used?
adopts a dictatorial style, only interested in ensuring task is completed, sole decision maker, preferred by males
dangerous situations, large groups, limited time, hostile groups, cognitive performers
Characteristics of a democratic leader and when would this be used?
ensure relationships develop within group, encourages group members to be involved in decisions, preferred by females
small groups, lots of time, friendly groups, autonomous performers
What is a laissez faire leadership style?
allows group members to make decisions, useful for a problem solving approach, only works for autonomous performers, a ‘figurehead’ of the group
