Formal Leadership
when a manager leads by exercising authority according to the organizations hierarchy and their position within the company
Informal Leadership
When a person without formal authority is able to influence and direct the behaviour of others
Position Power- Reward
Ability to give employees rewards
- raises, bonuses etc.
Position Power- Coercive
Capability to punish or withold positive outcome
- termination, verbal reprimands etc.
Position Power-Legitimate
Capability to control other people by your job position
- “I am the boss and you do what I say!”
Personal power- Expert
Capability to control other people because of your specialized knowledge
- technical skill, education, competence tec.
Personal power- Reference
Capability to control others because of their desire to identify personally and positively with the source of power
- maintained through good interpersonal relations which encourage admiration and respect in the eyes of others
