What are the 5 stages that every group goes through?
Groups grow in 5 steps:
Forming
Storming
Norming
Performing
Adjourning
what is Forming
People meet and figure out the task
Everyone is polite and careful. They don’t know each other well yet, so they try to figure out:
- Who’s in charge
- What the job is
- Who will do what
what is storming
People argue or disagree about ideas or roles
People have different ideas and may want to be the leader. This can cause:
- Disagreements
- Hurt feelings
- Competition
what is norming
People learn to work together and respect each other
People start to:
- Working together nicely
- Sharing ideas
- Respecting each other
- Now the group starts to feel like a team.
what is performing
The group works really well and gets stuff done
The group starts to:
- Trusts each other
- Solves problems fast
- Gets work done
- Feels strong and confident
what is Adjourning
The group ends or finishes the project and says goodbye
The group:
- Celebrates success
- Says goodbye
- Feels proud (but maybe a little sad)
What is group cohesiveness?
Degree to which members are attracted to group and each other.
What is group composition?
Mix of personality types (organized, curious, fun-loving, empathetic) for balance.
