Leadership Vs Management
Often these two words are used interchangeable
Management: “involves the activities to plan, organize, motivate, and control the human and material resources required to achieve outcomes consistent with the org. mission and purpose”

Transformational

Transactional
the boss makes the decisions with little or no input from workers. The service provided results in compensation or punishment.
Goals are set and the direction of care is giving, when its achieved a reward is provided, task focused. Majority of healthcare facilities, offers security and stability
Effects of Leadership on Organizational Outcomes:
Transactional
Work is supervised and completed according to rules.
Deadlines are met.
Job satisfaction is limited.
Level of commitment is low to stable.
Effects of Leadership of Organizational Outcomes:
Transformational
Loyalty is increased. Commitment is increased. Job satisfaction is increased. Morale is increased. Performance is enhanced.
Styles of Leaders
Authoritarian
Democratic
Laissez-faire
Authoritarian Leadership Style
Strong control is maintained over the group
Others are motivated by coercion
Others are directed with commands
Communication flows downward
Decision making does not involve others
Emphasis is on difference in status (“I” and ‘you”)
Criticism is punitive
Democratic Leadership Style
Less control is maintained
Economic and ego awards are used to motivate
Others are directed through suggestions and guidance
Communications flows upwards and downwards
Decision making involves others
Emphasis in on we rather than I or you
Criticism is constructive.
Laissez-Faire Leadership Style
Is permissive, with little or no control
Motivates by support when requested by the group or individuals
Provides little or no direction
Uses upward and downward communication between members of the group
Disperses decision making throughout the group
Places emphasis on the group
Does not criticize.
Follower Definition
Follower is an individual who takes another as a role model and who acts in accordance with, who initiates, and who supports and advocates the ideas and opinions of another.

Strength and independence
Critical thinking, ability to think for yourself
Ability to give feedback, constructive criticism
Cooperativeness and collaboration

Go beyond the standard and what is strictly required

Kelly Followers
Effective or exemplary followers -function independently, critical thinkers, challenge ideas
Alienated followers: - passivity is common, may use critical thinking. Described as angry, complainers, unhappy and uninvolved
“Yes” people – will do what they are told to do with enthusiasm and support the leader. Don’t like being in a position of decision making
Sheep followers –passive, dependent. Others can manipulate, don’t take initiative and must be given clear concise directions.
Pitman Followers
Partner: committed to high performance and building a relationship with leader
Contributors – does the job well, embraces change and works well with others
Politician:- very sensitive and skilled with interpersonal relationships. May not demonstrates a high level of general work performance and may neglect the job.
Subordinate: -may be competent with assigned tasks and do the job well. No commitment to improving or effort to support the leader.
Styles of Leaders & Followers
Authoritarian Leader – hold power, unique knowledge
Follower: dependent, passive, submissive, less knowledgeable.
Democratic Leader – limited power, shared knowledge
Follower: involved, different knowledge
Laissez-Faire Leader – no power, same or less knowledge,
Follower: independent, more knowledge
Transformational Leader – shares power, sees ahead
Follower: involved, interdependent, valued, knowledgeable
