Lead Flashcards
How is lead safety managed in construction?
Follow federal EPA and RRP guidelines
Certified renovators handle work on pre-1978 homes
Provide safety data sheets
Use HEPA vacuums, protective gear, and containment
What should you know about warranties in construction?
Back:
Cover construction defects
Substantial completion allows possession/use
Include equipment like furnaces
What are key lead exposure controls for employees?
Determine exposure limits (PEL: 50 µg/m³ over 8 hrs)
Provide protective equipment
Maintain clean facilities
Contain hazardous materials
Lead Safety Steps
- Might be present before 1978
2. Definitely present before 1960
3. Have entire house inspected and/or tested
4. Communicate and make all people nearby aware you will be doing work, when and where
5. Prepare the work area. Remove toys/furniture/cloths/etc.
6. Sheath all surfaces with ducktape and plastic
7. Hepa vacuum
8. Protect yourself
1) Safety glasses
2) Disposable gloves, hats, shoe covers, overalls, respirator
Work wet, work clean
- Employers responsibility
1) Determine if employees permissible exposure limit (PEL) is greater than 50 micrograms per cubic meter of air over an 8 hour period
2) Provides work clothes and equipment when exposure is greater than PEL. Includes respirators and body protection
3) Provides for the disposal of contaminated items
4) Provides showers, washing facilities, clean eating facilities, medical surveillance, training, posing of signs, record keeping, safety data sheets, maintain data for 30 years.
5) Housekeeping
a) Clean up must include containment of contaminated materials
b) Must use hepa vacuums
c) Minimize reentry of contaminants
Lead based paint: Renovation, repair and painting (RRP)
1) Federal law (EPA) pertains to protection of individuals and environment
2) Contractors are required to be certified renovators to do the following:
a) Work on homes built before 1978
b) Disturb an interior painted surface 6sq ft or greater
c) Disturb an exterior painted surface 20 sq ft or greater
d) Work at child occupied facilities
e) Provide owners/tenants with a renovate right pamphlet and obtain proof of delivery
f) Prevent lead contamination of occupants and employees
g) Follow lead safe work practices
Lead facts
ead ingested by children can create lead poisoning, brain damage, behavioral problems and death.
b) Lead dust breathed in by adults can create disorders including fetus coplications, kidney damage, brain damage and death
c) Lead is a heavy metal
d) Human bodies treat lead in a similar manner to iron and calcium
e) Lead stays in the blood stream for approximately 30 days
f) Lead stays in soft organs 6-8months
g) Lead stays in the bones and teeth up to 30 years
What is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas that is caused naturally in the soil but can seep out?
radon
The EPA has set a “Take Action Level” for radon at:
4 PCI/L
Radon is the second leading cause of ________. There are 21,000 related deaths in the U.S. each year.
lung cancer
Up until the ______, asbestos was commonly used in many building materials.
1980s
To protect yourself from asbestos during renovations or demolition, what is the most important thing you can do?
Have the house surveyed by a qualified asbestos professional.
Asbestos-containing material (ACM) means any material containing more than _____ asbestos.
1%
One who is capable of identifying existing asbestos hazards in the workplace and selecting the appropriate control strategy for asbestos exposure, who has the authority to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate them, is called __.
the competent person
Common products that might have contained asbestos in the past, and conditions which may release fibers, include:
steam pipes, boilers and furnace ducts
resilient floor tiles
soundproofing or decorative material sprayed on walls and ceilings
