What is Self-Awareness?
Being conscious of the internal aspects of ones nature
What are blind spots?
Characteristics or habits that people are not aware of, that limit their effectiveness and career success
What is personality?
The set of UNSEEN characteristics that underlie a stable pattern of behaviour.
Essentially, the unseen driving force that determines how you react in situations
What are the big five personality dimensions? Describe each
Extroversion: Degree to which a person is outgoing, sociable, talkative and comfortable meeting and talking to new people
Agreeableness: Degree to which a person is able to get along with others
Conscientiousness: Degree to which a person is responsible, dependable, persistent and achievement-oriented
Emotional Stability: Degree to which a person is well adjusted, calm and secure
Openness to Experience: Degree to which a person is willing to consider new ideas and try new things
What is a Locus of Control?
Defines whether a person places responsibility for what happens on themselves or on outside forces
What is a High Internal Locus of Control?
Belief that actions determine what happens to them
What is a Hight External Locus of Control?
Belief that outside forces determine what happens to them
What is authoritarianism?
The belief that power and status differences should exist in an organization
What are values?
Fundamental beliefs that an individual considers to be important and that have an impact on attitudes and behavior
What is the difference between Instrumental values and End values?
Instrumental values: Beliefs about the types of behavior that are appropriate for reaching goals
End values: Beliefs about the kind of goals or outcomes that are worth trying to pursue
What is attitude?
An evaluation (positive or negative) about people, events or things
What is Theory X and Theory Y?
Theory X: Assumption that people are basically lazy and not motivated to work and that they have a natural tendency to avoid responsibility
Theory Y: Assumption that people do not inherently dislike work and will commit themselves willingly to work that they care about
What is perception?
How you select, organize and interpret information to make sense out of the environment
In terms of perceptual distortions, what is perceptual defense?
Errors in judgement that arise from inaccuracies in the perceptual process
In terms of perceptual distortions, what is Stereotyping?
Tendency to assign an individual to a broad category and then attribute generalizations about the group to the individual
In terms of perceptual distortions, what is Halo Effect?
Overall impression of a person or situation based on one characteristic (+/-)
In terms of perceptual distortions, what is Projection?
Tendency to see one’s own personal traits in other people
What are Attributions?
Judgments about what caused a person’s behavior- either the characteristics or the situation
What is internal attribution?
Characteristics of the person led to the behavior
What is external attribution?
Situation caused the persons behavior
What is fundamental attribution error?
The tendency to underestimate external factors and overestimate internal factors
What is Self-Serving Bias?
Overestimate internal factors on success
Overestimate external factors on failure
What is cognitive style?
How a person perceives, processes, interprets and uses information
In terms of patterns of thinking, what is the Left hemisphere?
Logical, analytical thinking and linear approach to problem solving
In terms of patterns of thinking, what is the right hemisphere?
Creative, intuitive, values-based thought processes
What is the whole brain concept?
Basically, leaders need a bit of every type of thinking to succeed.
What is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)?
Test that measures how individuals differ in gathering and evaluating information for solving problems and making decisions
What are the four main groups of the MBTI?
Introversion vs Extroversion
Sensing vs Intuition
Thinking vs Feeling
Judging vs Perceiving
What is meant by leading with head and heart?
Whole leaders use both head and heart
What are Mental Models?
Theories people hold about specific systems in the world and their expected behavior
What is a Global Mindset?
The ability of managers to deal with a wide variety of groups, organizations, cultures and characteristics
What is Independent Thinking?
Questioning assumptions and interpreting data and events according to ones own beliefs.
What is mindfulness?
State of focused attention on the present moment
What is Intellectual Stimulation?
Arousing followers thoughts and imaginations as well as stimulating their ability to identify and solve problems creatively

Putting aside preconceptions and suspending beliefs and opinions

The ability to see the synergy of the whole rather than just the separate elements of a system
