This [situation] inspired (to) the author, who is unknown, to write his work, Lazarillo de Tormes.

Because (As) Lazarillo was born near the river Tormes, his parents named him Lazarillo de Tormes.

Tormes is (to the) northwest of Madrid and near the famous university city, Salamanca.

The father of Lazarillo was a miller. He stole from the sacks of the mill.

Lazarillo and his widowed mother went to Salamanca. She rented a small house near the university. There she prepared (the) food and washed (the) clothes.

After a while (time) it was discovered that what Zayde brought (was bringing) to the house had been stolen.

Zayde and the mother were punished and had to separate.

When Lazarillo and the blind man left Salamanca, they encountered a rock statue of a bull.

clever, astute: The blind man was a very clever old man and knew many ways to take money from (to) people.
astuto: El ciego era un viejo muy astuto y sabía muchas maneras de sacarle dinero a la gente.
to pray, praying; to earn one’s living; humble; devoted: The old man made his living [by] praying for other people. He prayed in (of) [a] humble and devoted manner.
rezar, rezando; ganarse la vida; humilde; devoto: El viejo se ganaba la vida rezando por otras personas. Él rezaba de manera humilde y devota.
remedy: The blind man was familiar with remedies for every (all) class of infirmities.

He never gave Lazarillo enough to eat.

padlock: He customarily put (had the custom of putting) in a sack with [a] padlock all the food that people gave him during the day.

Lazarillo had to steal (rob) the food that the blind man guarded in the sack.

(drinking) straw; hole; to fool: Lazarillo made a hole in (to) the jar where the old man had the wine. He drank the wine with a straw. At first he fooled the blind man.

One day the blind man discovered the trick. He grabbed the jar and threw it forcefully (with force) at the face of Lazarillo.

consciousness: Lazarillo lost consciousness. The pieces of the jar cut his entire face and broke his teeth.

To earn their living the blind man and Lazarillo went from village to village (of village in village).

The blind man started to take the grapes two at a time (two by two) (of two in two).
El ciego empezó a tomar las uvas de dos en dos.
Lazarillo should have complained, but he simply started taking the grapes three by three.

trick: The blind man caught (trapped) Lazarillo playing a trick.

town crier: Finally Lazarillo worked as a town crier and a wine seller. He got married.
