Layout Flashcards
What are the 5 Gestalt principles in his psychology theory about layout?
- Cognitive Dissonance - consistency and pattern.
- Expected Effect - how we expect to perceive something.
- Aesthetic Effect - aesthetically pleasing = easier to read.
- Closure - view individual elements as one single recognisable pattern.
- Common Fate - elements moving in the same direction are considered more related than objects moving in other directions or stationary objects.
What are the different steps in the design process?
- Assimilation.
- General Study.
- Development.
- Communication.
What are the 4 layout effects that can be used?
- Orientation + Position - can create distinct contrast
- Colour - can create focal points and mute the impact of an element allowing others to stand out.
- Negative Space - accessibility provides paths to navigate centred content. Static layout - allowing reader to move through the format.
What are the different methods used in layout for textual information?
Pacing = depends on the target audience and format of the reading piece.
Progression of information = initial pages strong and reader more inclined to continue.
Consistency = Items are treated in a similar way and thread for reader to navigate.
Hierarchy = Creates balance and order. Establishes relationship between areas of content - scale can alter this - the bigger it is the more important.
What is Pragnanz?
The idea that we order our experience in a manner of regular, orderly and symmetrical and simple units - hypothetically allowing us to predict what comes next.
Explain the idea of symmetry in terms of layout.
The mind perceives objects as being symmetrical around a centre point and this is perceptually pleasing.
