Layer Of The Skin Flashcards
Most cells of the epidermis are keratinocytes (keratin cells), which produce keratin, the fibrous protein that makes the epidermis a tough protective layer in a process called keratinization.
Epidermis
o deepest layer; some cells in this layer are stem cells AKA: stratum germinativum- to indicate its role in forming new cells.
Stratum basale
consists of 8-10 layered keratinocytes; it contains projections of melanocytes and intraepidermal macrophages.
Stratum spinosum
consists of 3 to 5 layers of flattened keratinocytes that are undergoing apoptosis.
Stratum granulosum
is a form of programmed cell death that occurs in multicellular organisms.
Apoptosis
(corne= horn or horny) Few to 50 or more rows of dead, flat keratinocytes that contain mostly keratin.
Stratum corneum
Present only in skin of fingertips, palms, and soles; consists of four to six rows of clear, flat, dead keratinocytes with large amounts of keratin.
Stratum Lucidum
The dermis is your “hide.” It is a strong, stretchy envelope that helps to bind the body together.
