What are indications for stimulant laxative use?
- Constipation
- Suppositories for faecal impaction
What is the mechanism of action of stimulant laxatives?
Increase water and electrolyte secretion from colonic mucosa, thereby increasing volume of colonic content and stimulating peristalsis. They also have direct pro-peristaltic action
How does Senna stimulate peristalsis?
Bacterial metabolism releases metabolites that have a direct action on the enteric nervous system, stimulating peristalsis
How does Docusate sodium work?
Stimulant and faecal softening actions
How do glycerol suppositories work?
Local stimulation - used to treat faecal impaction
What are adverse side effects of stimulant laxatives?
- Abdominal pain/cramping
- Diarrhoea
- Melanosis Coli
What are examples of stimulant laxatives?
- Senna
- Bisacodyl
- Glycerol suppositories
- Docusate Sodium
How often should stimulant laxatives be taken?
Twice per day - variable dose, unless rectal suppositories - once only or PRN one a day max
