A

8-12 hours - bedtime dose recommended.

17
Q

Which form of stimulant laxatives act the quickest? In how long do they act?

A

Suppositories. 20-60 minutes.

18
Q

What are the side effects of stimulant laxatives?

A

Abdominal cramps.

19
Q

A

Red.

20
Q

Stimulant laxatives should not be used in which age group unless under the advice of a prescriber?

A

Children under 12.

21
Q

Give some examples of stool softening laxatives.

A

Liquid paraffin, docusate sodium (weak stimulant), peanut (arachis) enemas.

22
Q

How do stool softening laxatives work?

A

Decrease surface tension and increase the penetration of water into the stool. Softens and wets stool.

23
Q

Which laxatives are first line?

A

Bulk forming (BOS).

24
Q

Which laxatives should be used for opioid induced constipation?

A

Osmotic or stimulant. NOT bulk forming.

25
Q

Describe the treatment of constipation in pregnant women.

A

Diet and lifestyle first line. Then bulk forming. Then osmotic. Stimulants can be used but cause abdominal pain and diarrhoea.

26
Q

Describe the treatment of constipation in children.

A

Diet and lifestyle first. Macrogols are first line treatment, then stimulant if macrogols fail. Can try lactulose.
