What are the symptoms of dyspepsia?
Abdominal pain, bloating and nausea.
What are the alarm symptoms one should be aware of if a patient is presenting with dyspepsia?
Bleeding, dysphagia, recurrent vomiting, weight loss, chest pain symptomatic of MI.
When should patient presenting with dyspepsia be referred to the GP?
Warning symptoms and age over 55 with new onset of symptoms.
What classes of drugs are used in the treatment of dyspepsia?
Antacids, PPIs and H2 receptor antagonists.
What is a common side effect of magnesium containing?
Diarrhoea (laxative effect).
What is a common side effect of aluminium containing antacids?
Constipation.
What is one of the consequences of long-term use of calcium antacids?
Hyperkalaemia and alkalosis.
