Softens the stool, making it easier to pass

They keep more water in the bowel which:
- soften stool
- stimulates peristalsis
How does Senna works?
It irritates the intestinal tract and triggers peristalsis
What happens if a patient overuse laxative?
- Decreased Muscle Tone
- Electrolyte Imbalance
What is a good patient education for someone taking DOCUSATE?
Drink a lot of Water@
What is the adverse effect of Senna?
- Nausea
- Cramping
- Bloating
What is the contraindication of SENNA?
Do not give it to patient with intestinal blockage
What happens when a patient overuse Senna?
- Decrease Muscle tone
- Dependency
What is a much better option for Chronic constipation?
PEG 3350
What is one thing about PEG 3350?
It can be taken on a daily basis
What is the use of Lactulose?
causes the intestine to excrete ammonia (associated with liver fx)
