Laws of Motion Flashcards
What is force
An external push or pull that changes or tends to change the state of rest or uniform motion of a body along a straight line
What are the two types of force
Contact and Non contact
What is inertia
The inherent property of a body to remain at rest or motion along a straight line unless acted by an external force
What is newton’s first law
An object tends to stay at rest or motion with same speed and direction unless acted upon by an external unbalanced force
What is linear momentum
Product of mass and velocity (v)
What are the graphs of momentum
- When m or v is constant = straight line
- When p is constant = rectangular hyperbola
What is newtons second law of motion
the rate of change of momentum is directly proportional to the applied and this change takes place in the direction of the applied force
What is impulse of force
The measure of the degree to which an external force produces a change in the momentum
What are the consequences of 2nd law
- Provides the concept of inertial mass
- measurement of force
- No force for constant velocity
- Vector law
What are the illustrations of impulse of force
- A cricket catches a ball back
- Soft floor causes less injury
- vehicles have shockers
What is newtons third law
To every action there is an opposite and equal reaction
What are examples of the third law
- Walking on ground
- Walking on sand or ice
- Swimming
- Firing gun
What is law of conservation of linear momentum
In the absence of an external force, the total momentum of a system remains constant
What are examples of law of conservation of linear momentum
- Firing gun
- Jumping from boat to shore
- Flight of rocket
What are concurrent forces
if the forces applied to a body are such that their lines of action meet at a single poount
