Friction Flashcards
1
Q
What is friction
A
It is an opposing force which comes into play when one body moves or tries to move over the surface of another body
2
Q
What is limiting friction
A
It is the maximum value of static friction which comes into play when the body just begins to move over the surface of the other body
3
Q
What are the laws of limiting friction
A
- Depend on nature of surface
- force is tangential or parallel and its direction is opposite to the direction the body tries to move
- limiting friction is directly proportional to the reaction force
4
Q
What are the laws of kinetic friction
A
- Independent of contact area
- almost constant for a given pair of surfaces
- friction is directly proportional to normal reaction force
5
Q
What is angle of repose
A
The minimum angle at which the body placed on an inclined surface begins to start moving
6
Q
What is the formula for rolling friction
A
f = μ * Reaction force/ radius
7
Q
Is it easier to pull or push a roller
A
It is easier to pull
