abuse
action that intentionally causes harm or injuries another person
advance directives
legal document that states a persons wished about receiving medical care if that person is no longer able to make decisions
Americans with disabilities (ADA)
prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in several areas, including employment, transportation, public accommodations, communications and access to state and local government’ programs and services.
arbitration
an alternative dispute resolution method where the parties in dispute agree to have their case heard by a qualified arbitrator out of court.
consent
a voluntary agreement to another’s proposition.
durable power of attorney
a power of attorney which typically remains in effect until the death of the principal or until the document is revoked
civil law
branch of law that regulates the non-criminal rights, duties of persons and equal legal relations between private individuals, as opposed to criminal law or administrative law.
criminal law
is a system of laws concerned with punishment of individuals who commit crimes.
Defamation of character
false statement presented as a fact that causes injury or damage to the character of the person it is about
Emancipated minor
when a person under 18 is fully independent from their parents or guardian and has adult rights.
express consent
consent in writing, including consent conveyed electronically that bears an electronic signature

Any offense punishable by death or imprisonment for more than one year
good samaritan act
a law providing immunity from liability to a good samaritan whose negligent administration of aid causes injury.
Guardian
custody of the children and the authority to make decisions concerning the children’s protection etc
implied consent
consent which is not expressly granted by a person, but rather implicitly granted by a person’s actions and the facts and circumstances of a particular situation
