What is an allergic reaction?
Reaction of the immune system to a typically harmless substance
What is anaphylaxis shock?
Sudden severe allergic reaction that can cause death
What do you use to treat the average insect bite?
Hydrocortisone cream
For arterial bleeding, what needs to be done immediately or else the patient may die?
Apply pressure to prevent bleeding out
what is a burn?
An injury to skin or tissues caused by heat, cold, electricity, chemicals, friction
or radiation
what is choking?
a life-threatening medical emergency where the airway is blocked by food or another object
for severe choking, what needs to be done?
Back blows, or heimlich maneuver. If they become unconscious due to not breathing, perform CPR
what is diabetes?
Metabolic disorder where there is high levels of blood sugar for a long time
For low blood sugar, name two things a diabetic can be given.
GIve them a high carb snack, with sugar such as honey or orange juice.

For large puncture wounds, what does a person NOT do?
do not remove the object.
what is frostbite?
Occurs when exposure to low temperatures causes freezing of the skin
what is a heat stroke?
Severe heat illness where the body temperature rises to above 104° F
what do you do if someone has a heat stroke?
Move them to a cool area, give them plenty of fluids, and bathe them in cool water to get their temperature down
what is a heart attack?
A life-threatening medical condition where the blood flow decreases or stops to part of the
heart
what are the symptoms of a heart attack?
- Chest pain or discomfort
- Shoulder, arm, jaw pain (especially the left side)
- Shortness of breath, nausea, cold sweat
what can a person do if they think they can have a heart attack?
- Chew aspirin
- Perform CPR if there is no pulse
what is the treatment for a drug overdose?
Give them activated charcoal to prevent absorption or provide them with narcan (naloxone)
what is a seizure?
- Period of abnormal neuronal activity in the brain
- Manifests as uncontrollable shaking to loss of consciousness
what is a stroke?
Medical condition where poor blood flow in the brain leads to cell death
