Chambers’ dictionary defines fault as culpability for that which has happened amiss

• The oxford english dictionary gives further definitions: ‘responsibility for something wrong, culpability … a defect causing something wrong or undesirable…’

By being culpable and responsible for something done wrong a person is blameworthy and so can be punished and made to pay for their actions
