Infra legal disputes
Those that occur outside the legal system without involving violence
Law
The cultural knowledge that people use to settle disputes by means of agents who have the recognized authority to do so
Extralegal disputes
Occur outside the law and escalate into violence. Feuds and wars are ex.
Self-redress
The legal process of dispute settlement where disputants are given the authority by members of their society to make a settlement
Go-betweens
Trusted third parties who are given the legal right to negotiate and resolve disputes
Moots
Informal community meetings at which parties to the dispute are heard and the attendees are given the authority to settle disputes
Courts
Formal institutions presided over by individuals who have the authority to settle disputes
Political systems
Represent the process for making and carrying out public policy
Policy
The guidelines for action
Public
The group of people affected by the policy
Support
Anything that contributes to the adoption and enforcement of public policy
Legitimacy
A kind of support based on peoples positive evaluation of public policy or public officials
Coercion
Support derived from the threat or use of force or the promise of short term gain
Authority
The right to make and enforce public policy. More commonly found in complex societies
Leadership
The ability to influence others to act. Exists in all societies but foragers and many horticultural societies lack authority figures and depend on leadership to make political decisions
