What is indigenous absorption?
The idea that indigenous culture would be bread out.
What was indigenous assimilation?
The idea that if everyone was treated as white, everyone would behave like they were white.
What is a minority group?
A group that is numerically and dominantly smaller than the rest of the population.
What is the purpose of human rights?
They recognise the value of each person regardless of background.
What do absolute rights cover?
Slavery, torture, recognition before law, etc.
What are the two types of law limitations?
Express and implied
What is an express limitation?
They include the prescribed purpose to justify the limitation of that right.
What is an implied limitation?
They arise from the interpretation of terms such as ‘fair; and ‘arbitrary’
What is the Australian human rights commission responsible for? (3)
- Making human rights everyday language. - empowering people to understand and exercise human rights. - keeping the government accountable.
What is racial discrimination?
Any exclusion based on race.
What does the racial discrimination act aim for?
Equality regardless of background.
What is direct discrimination?
When someone is treated less favourably because of race.
What is indirect discrimination?
The same rule for everyone, but the rule is unfair to certain people.
What act deals with race discrimination in Australia?
Equal Opportunity Act (1994)
