The removal of tissue of the genitalia of young girls to abide to social norms.
How old are victims of FGM?
Generally, 2-8.
What is a clitoridectomy?
The removal of the clitoral hood and potentially clitoris
What is an FGM excision?
removal of the clitoris or labia minora
What is FGM infibulation?
Removal of clitoris, vaginal lips and stitching of the vagina
What are the consequences of FGM?
Pain, shock, anaemia, infection, bleeding, trouble urinating, trouble with pregnancy, abscess, death, PTSD, anxiety, etc.
Why is FGM practised? (6)
The patriarchy, customs, ritual, gender definition, honour or marriage.
What sections of Australian criminal law refers to FGM? (2)
306(2) and 306(4)
What does section 306(2) of Australian criminal law refer to?
Someone performing FGM.
What does section 306(4) of Australian criminal law refer to?
Someone who removes a child for FGM.
Who is FGM more likely to occur to?
Isolated women.
