What is a dowry?
Money, property, goods or other gift transferred from a person to a partners family before upon or after marriage.
What size can dowries amount to?
Enough to effect welfare, sometimes 4-6x the annual income.
What can dowry abuse include?
Coercive demands for larger gifts, sometime to also terminate a pregnancy.
What section of Australian law covers dowries?
Section 4AB of the Family Law Act (1975): Family Violence
Are all forms of dowry abuse covered in Australian law?
No
What is the issue with prosecuting dowry abuse?
Dowry abuse generally has to be combined with another offence to be prosecuted.
Is dowry abuse generally an isolated event?
No, dowry abuse usually comes coupled with other forms of abuse.
