Jurisdiction
Authority or power to do something, such as make laws.
Quasi criminal offence
Laws passed by the provinces or municipalities are not considered part of criminal law but are rather considered Quasi criminal law; and offence against certain provincial laws; not part of federal criminal law.
The criminal code of canada
A statute containing the main criminal offences of Canada, the rules for prosecuting and appealing them, and the penalties that apply to each offence.
Summary conviction offences
Minor offences for which an accused can be arrested or summoned to court without delay
Indictable offences
A severe criminal offence for which the crown proceeds by indictment; Carries a corresponding singly severe punishment
Hybrid offences/dual procedure offences
An offence where the crown has the right to choose whether to proceed summarily or by indictment.
Ex: theft
Criminal law:
The body of public law that declares acts to be crimes and prescribed punishments for those crimes
Civil law
Another term for private law governing the relationship between individuals.
