A

The EU allows appellation designations that were registered before December 31, 2011 to continue to be used on wine labels as long as they fall into the larger European framework introduced in 2009.

This is why you are more likely to see French wines labeled with Appellation d’Origine Controlée (AOC) designates and Italian wines with Denominazione di Origine Controllata (e Garantita) DOC/DOCG designates as there are historic ties as well as quality perceptions that producers and consumers still hold.

What is a wine co-op (or co-operative)?

A

Co-op is a wine business owned by their members (e.g. grape growers). The growers are guaranteed that they can deliver and sell their grapes to a winery that is owned by the co-op.
Co-op is very common in Europe because the average vineyard is small and it is rarely economical for them to produce and market their own wines.

In terms of being a wine producer, what is merchant (aka négociant)?

A

Merchant buy grapes from growers or co-op. They can reject grapes that are not fullfill the standard.
Merchants are more common outside of Europe, and many are large wine brands because the growers tend to have larger vineyards and the merchants only need to deal with small number of growers.
