categories
pom v - vet only
pom vps - vet, pharmacist or suitably qualified person
nfa vps - non food animal, as above
avm gsl - authorised general medicine, general sale
vet can only prescribe pom v to animals they have seen recently and physically examined
phamacovigilence
collection, detection, assessment and monitoring of adverse events
adverse event
any observation in animals that is unfavourable and unintended that happens after medicine use
cascade
1 - vet medicine, that animal, that condition. UK wide
2 - authorised in NI, that animal, that condition
3 - authorised for a different species or condition
4 - authorised human medicine, needs special import certificate if not authorised in uK
5 - preparation by vet, pharmacist or other
considerations around prescribing and dispensing
withdrawal times
horses - can’t go into food chain if have ever had bute
person administering must be competent and advised on safe administration (Eg if owner giving it then give clear instructions)
advise of any warnings or contraindications
only prescribe minimum needed to treat the condition
appropriate containers and labelling
appropriate storage
Schedules of drugs
1 - highly addictive, no therapeutic value
2 - methadone, fentanyl, pethidine, ketamine
3 - buprenorphine, barbiturates, benzos
4 & 5 - no special controls
schedule 2
complete records kept in controlled drug register - on site for 2 years
prescription signed by person issuing
only valid 28 days
repeats not allowed
kept in locked container
any taken out and not used destroyed
nurses can draw up and administer but not decide on dose or authorise
schedule 3
same as 2 but doesn’t need to go in controlled drugs register
