Accomodate
eliminate or adjust requirements or conditions to ensure that a person can carry out the duties of a job. (employer must do things to make sure employee can work well with no issues)
Accomodation
The place where people live, or want to live
Affirmative Action
Giving advantages to those people who have been discriminated against in the past
bona fide occupational requirement
When specific skills are necessary for a job that people may not have the skill for and are not hired for a job or are fired is not discrimination
Complainant
The person making the allegation of discrimination. (person who filed the complaint)
Conciliation
Bringing conflicting parties to a resolution
Constructive discrimination
employment policies that inadvertently exclude certain individuals resulting in discrimination (eg. height requirement in police stations used to discriminate against women and most minority groups because too short)
Direct discrimination
An overt act of discrimination. (eg. you cannot get a job because you are a woman=direct discrimination)
Discrimination
Making a distinction between people and treating them differently on a basis other than individual merit (like an officer and a soldier is not discrimination)
Facilities
Areas or buildings designated for public use
Gravamen
The most serious part of an accusation (in discrimination it is what the discrimination was, eg. color, race, sex)
Harassment
Persistent behavior that violates the human rights of the person (victim)
Human rights
- The right to receive equal treatment
- The right to be free from prohibited discrimination and harassment
- The right to have access to places, services, and opportunities
Human rights codes
Legal documents that protect people from prohibited discrimination
Mediation
Intervention between conflicting parties that promotes compromise or settlement of the dispute
