Latitude And Longitude Flashcards
What is latitude used to locate
To find out how far north or south a place is, lines of latitude are used. These lines run parallel to the Equator
What is longitude used to locate?
To find out how far east of west a place is, lines of longitude are used. These lines run from the top of the Earth to the bottom.
Tell me about the southern and northern Hemisphere.
The Equator, it’s at the centre of the lines of latitude and is at 0° latitude. Anything lying south of the Equator is in the Southern Hemisphere and is labeled °S. Anything lying north of the Equator is in the Northern Hemisphere and is labeled °N. The North Pole is 90° N and the South Pole is 90°S.
Tell me about the Eastern and Western Hemisphere.
The line labelled 0° longitude is called the Prime Meridian or the Greenwich Meridian and runs through London. Anything lying east of the Greenwich Meridian is in the Eastern Hemisphere and is labeled °E . Anything lying west of the Greenwich Meridian is in the western Hemisphere and is labeled °W.
Why is Greenwich important?
In 1884, the Greenwich Observatory was chosen as the Prime Meridian, 0 degrees- a starting point for measuring longitude. The grid of numbered lines of latitude and longitude allows us to accurately locate any place in the world.
What is the line of latitude called that runs more towards the northern hemisphere?
The Tropic of Cancer
What is the name of the line of latitude that runs more towards the southern hemisphere?
The Tropic of Capricorn
