Biosphere & Ecosystems Flashcards
What is a biome?
A large- scale community of organisms that have evolved from the interact of the earths spheres: The Lithosphere, the Hydrosphere and the Atmosphere.
Name all the different layers of a rainforest staring from the bottom
The forest floor, the understory- the shrub layer, the canopy and the emergent layer
What does the shrub layer do?
Consists of ferns- shade loving plants and fungi, due to the lack of sunlight.
What does the under canopy layer consist of?
Small trees waiting for their chance to shoot up to be a canopy.
What does the emergent layer/ canopy layer consist of?
It consists of fully grown trees. Which grow long and straight and branches to great heights- in competition to capture sunlight
What does hydrosphere mean?
High humidity in the air, heavy rainfall, water on the vegetation, and rivers .
What does atmosphere mean?
Almost daily heavy rainfall and high temperatures throughout the year, which is the idea for continual rapid plant growth.
Lithosphere meaning
Rainforests then dot have poor soils, but the climate means that the top humus layer is rich in minerals due to the rapid decay of vegetation of the forest floor
