Simon Bolivar
Simon Bolivar was a Venezuelan soldier and statesman who turned into a dictator, he played a central role in the South American independence movement.
He was a creole (Spaniard born in Latin America)
Simon Bolivar after the revolution
Bolivar gained leadership of all of Latin America after they gained independence from Spain. However, it was extremely difficult for him to control over 10 different provinces in one empire, causing all the states to split apart.
After Bolivar
- Created many independent countries in Latin America.
- Freedom and independence for the people
nationalism
ideas of one’s own nation and support for its interests, especially to the exclusion or detriment of the interests of other nations

September 25, 1808 – September 29, 1833
Peninsulares
The Peninsulares were born in Spain and more overall power who were at the top of Spain’s social hierarchy
Creoles
The Creoles were people born in New Spain and were in the middle of the social hierarchy.
Mestizos
Mixed peoples with both Spanish and Native American family (were in the middle of the hierarchy)
Natives and slaves
Bottom 2 groups of the hierarchy, with slaves having the least power in Latin America
Hypocrisy of it all
Although Bolivar fought for freedom for Latin America, the revolution ended with a whole new dictatorship, with Bolivar himself at the top of the food chain.
