Lateralisation and split brain-EVAL Flashcards

1
Q

what is one issue with split brain research?

A

It is idiographic because it looks at INDIVIDUAL case studies such as Sperrys research and makes a GENERAL assumption about th erest of the population. This means it lacks POP. validity as we CANNOT generalise result sof one individual to the rest of the world.

Q

Another issue of split-brain research is that it was NOT standardised.

A

This was because the severance of the corpus callosum was more severe on different degrees to some patients than others. This means that there will be a LACK of control in the study, making us unsure on the findings of the research.

Q

another issue with split-brain research is that some patients were previously suffering from epilepsy

A

These patients were suffering from epilepsy and were on long-term drugs. This is an issue as it becomes a CONFOUNDING variable;e, affecting the results of the study and LOWERING the I.v as we’re not sure if we are measuring split-brain research or effects of drug therapy, or epilepsy.

Q

One strength of split-brain research is that it uses case-studies.

A

This is a strength as it ALLOWS in DEPTH research on an individual.

HOWEVER, it may also be a weakness as similarly to split-brain’s Sperrys research ultimately becomes IDIOGRAPHIC when you attempt to generalise result so the rest of the population.
