Lateral Leg Flashcards
Give the origin, insertion, innervation, action, and test for:
Peroneus Longus
Origin:
Head + superior 2/3s of lateral surface of fibula + lateral tibial condyle
Insertion:
1st metatarsal + medial cuneiform (descends posterior to lateral malleolus, after phases under the foot)
Innervation:
Superficial Peroneal Nerve (L5,S1,2)
Action:
- Evert the ankle
- Plantar flexes ankle
- Maintains foot arch
Test:
Evert ankle strongly against resistance. If acting normally, muscle tendon can be seen + palpated inferior to lateral malleolus.
Give the origin, insertion, innervation, action, and test for:
Peroneus Brevis
Origin:
Inferior + lateral surface of fibular shaft
Insertion:
Dorsal surface of tuberosity on lateral side of 5th metatarsal
Innervation:
Superficial Peroneal nerve (L5,S1,2)
Action:
- Everts the ankle
- Plantar flexes the ankle
Test:
Evert ankle strongly against resistance. If acting normally, tendon can be seen and palpated posterior to lateral malleolus.

Which nerve is near the small saphenous vein?
