Latent Heat Flashcards
What is change of state
Reversible changes in matter
The matter’s chemical properties and molecular composition do not change
Change of state: Absorption or release of energy (Solid to Liquid)
When a solid reaches melting point, the particles gain energy and are able to partly overcome the force of attraction between them
They no longer stay in a fixed position.
Change of state: Absorption or release of energy (Liquid to Gas)
Particles gain enough energy to completely overpower the intermolecular forces of attraction.
Change of state: Absorption or release of energy
At certain temperatures, a change of state occurs instead of an increase in temperature when heating an object.
What is latent heat
During a change of state, a substance absorbs or releases heat but temp remains the same.
This is called latent heat
Latent heat fusion - Melting
Latent heat vaporisation - Turning into gas
Formulae
Q=mL
L = Latent heat of fusion or vaporisation
