The lecture presented the criteria as related to 3 areas: Inability to control use, Impaired life functioning and Physical dependency- meets two of criteria in 12 month period
• Biology of Addiction o Generally understand the role of dopamine and the mesolimbic system.
• Reward system, dopamine affected by addictive substances, repeat activity for dopamine reward- childhood trauma leads to fewer dopamine receptors
Be familiar with the 6 stages of the Cycle of Change Addiction
o Precontemplation- no problem
o Contemplation- thinking about change
o Preparation- what can I do, what’s my plan?
o Maintenance- create new behaviors, watch for relapse
o Relapse- fall back into addiction behaviors
o Termination- goal, very few reach

5-15% die from starvation/suicide

o 5-15% of teen women have OSFED, do not strictly meet other criteria
• Risk Factors Eating Disorders - What are risk factors for eating disorders related to family environment and abuse.
o Focus on thinness, perfectionism, mom with ED
o Abuse, teasing about body shape
o High correlation with mood disorders, low self esteem, perfectionism, obsessive thoughts, asceticism, ego deficiency, deficient interoceptive awareness, hilde bruch- parents overanticipate needs
• Generally, what is a Personality disorder (PD) as defined in the lecture.
o Traits are maladaptive, inflexible, unusual, intense, severe, ego syntonic
o Lifelong, pervasive, egosyntonic
o Define ego-syntonic- in keeping with personality
• Cluster A Personality Disorders: “Odd, Eccentric”
o Paranoid PD- disturbed, suspicious, blaming, jealous
o Schizoid PD- robot, solitary
o Schizotypal PD- schizophrenia-like
• Cluster B: “Dramatic, Emotional”
o Histrionic PD- need to be center of attention, dramatic, inappropriate, impulsive
o Narcissistic PD- grandiosity, self-important, requires admiration, lack of empathy
o Antisocial PD- Pattern of disregard and violation of the rights of others, deceitfulness, aggressiveness, criminal acts
o Borderline PD- border of neurosis/psychosis, unstable emotions, relationships, fear of abandonment, negative emotions at times, low flexibility
• Cluster C: “Anxious, Fearful”
o Avoidant PD- social inhibition, feel inadequate, hypersensitive to negative evaluation
o Dependent PD- submissive, clinging, difficulty making decisions
o Obsessive-Compulsive PD- preoccupation with orderliness, rules, moralistic, perfectionism interferes with completing work
• PD’s Causes and Risk Factors - What is the main environmental factor correlated with PDs?
10-14% prevalence, mild to moderate genetic predispostions, observable from birth, trauma (higher rates of PD’s in people with)
• What is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy used to treat?
Borderline, teach CBT, acceptance, 1 yr commitment, individual therapy, group skills training
