last Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the sequence of transcription
A
- Two strands of DNA are unzipped
- RNA polymerase attaches to the DNA
- RNA polymerase moves along the DNA strand
- The newly formed strand of mRNA is ready to leave the nucleus
2
Q
Describe the sequence of translation
A
- mRNA travels through cytoplasm into the ribosome
- For every codon the ribosome lines up one complementary molecule of tRNA
- tRNA carries amino acids
- Anticodon attached to codon
- Used tRNA exit the ribosome and collect another amino acid in the cytoplasm
- A chain is eventually build up, this is called a polypeptide
3
Q
What does progesterone do and where is it produced
A
- Produced in the female ovaries
- Used for maintaining the uterus lining during pregnancy
- It stops the release of FSH and LH which releases the eggs
4
Q
What does Oestrogen do and where is it porduced
A
- Produced by the female ovaries
- Used for the development of secondary sexual characteristics in females and regulating the menstrual cycle
- Causes growth and repair of the lining of the uterus wall
5
Q
How is the ADH used in osmoregulation
A
- Water content of the blood falls below a certain level if dehydrated
- More ADH will be released
- Collecting ducts more permeable for water to be reabsorbed
6
Q
WHere is LH and FSH produced and what do they do
A
- Released in the pituitary gland
- LH: Stimulates the ovary to produce progesterone
- FSH: Causes egg to start maturing in the ovary. It also stimulates the ovaries to start releasing oestrogen
7
Q
Eye change when looking at a near object
A
- Ciliary muscles contract
- Suspensory ligaments loosen
- Lens will be thincker and more light refracted
8
Q
Definition of biodiversity
A
The variety of different species present in the community of an ecosystemR
9
