Ecology Flashcards
Definition of Biodiversity
The variety of different species present in the community of an ecosystem
Definition of a community
All the organisms present in an ecosystem
Definition of Habitat
The place where an organism lives
Definition of population
All the organisms of one species foundi n a particular area
Definition of species
A group of organisms capable of breeding with each other to produce fertile offspring
Definition of Biome
Regions of the planet which are characterized by their climate and contains distinctive communities of plants and animals
Abiotic factors that affect the population size and distribution of organisms
- Light intensity
- Temperature
- Moisture level
- Soil pH content
- carbon dioxide level for plants
- oxygen levels for aquatic animals
Biotic factors affecting the abundance and distribution of organisms
- Availability of food
- New predators
- New pathogens
- More animals which causes more competition for food`
What are decomposes in the trophic level
Feed on dead and decaying organisms, and on the undigested parts of plant and animal matter in faeces
Why only 10% of energy is transferred from one trophic level top the next
- Some of the biomass consumed at each level can’t be digested and is excreted as waste
- Energy escapes as heat during respiration
- Plants and animals may die a nonpredatory death and their biomass isn’t passed on to the next consumer
list the four greenhouse gases
-water vapor, carbon dioxide, trouts oxide, methane, CFC
