Last Flashcards
Stipa gigantea
S. gigantea is a robust tufted evergreen grass to 2m, with arching linear green leaves and large panicles of oat-like, long-awned purplish flowers which ripen to gold
Miscanthus sinensis ‘Ferner Osten’
Miscanthus ‘Ferner Osten’ forms an arching clump of slender green folige, which turns copper-red in autumn before dying back for winter. The fireworks however start even earlier in the season, when the plume-like flower panicles emerge in summer. These are initially a rich shade of red, but they turn pinkish and then silvery as they mature over the season. It’s a showy grass, that can be used as a stand-alone specimen, but it will also add bit of late drama to the border.
Salvia nemerosa ‘Blauhugel’
Wood sage (Blue hill)
Lamiaceae family
An herbaceous perennial forming a clump of mid-green foliage, with erect stems bearing dense terminal spike-like racemes of small, deep violet-blue flowers in early summer
Rhianthus minor
Yellow rattle
To establish wildflower meadow forms a semi parasitic relationship with other plants especially grasses, taking water and nutrients from grass to weaken it and allow other plants to establish
annual about 30-50cm tall with simple or branched stems bearing narrowly lance-shaped, nettle-like dark green leaves and tubular, 2-lipped yellow flowers with brown or purple teeth, within a bladdery, inflated calyx, the seeds rattling inside when ripe
In autumn find a sunny spot with established grass or lawn (if you are trying to convert it to a wildflower meadow) that has been cut back to 4-5cm high. Scarify the soil with a wire rake opening up a few bare patches and scatter the seed onto this. Keep the grass short over winter and the seed will start to germinate in spring. Once established it self-seeds freely, but cutting it back before it flowers will prevent it coming back in subsequent years.
Matteuccia struthiopteris
Ostrich fern/ shuttlecock fern
Fiddleheads in spring, open crown at base
Deciduous herbaceous perennial
Structural
Damp shade
Lobelia cardinalsis
Cardinal flower
Red petal, campanula family
Long green slightly glossy leaf bronze or purple tinged
L. cardinalis is an erect, clump-forming herbaceous perennial to 90cm in height, with rather glossy bright green oblong leaves and brilliant scarlet, two-lipped flowers 5cm in length in terminal spikes

Ginkgo biloba
One of oldest species on planet, around in dinosaur times and can live for up to 3500 years, native to China/ Japan
Can tolerate poor air quality- street tree in China
The maidenhair tree is a large, deciduous tree with an irregular, spreading crown and deeply cracked, brown bark. It has fan-shaped, greenish-yellow leaves that have two or more distinct lobes. In autumn, the leaves of the maidenhair tree turn golden and fall to the ground. Whilst male trees have pollen-producing floral spikes, fertilised female trees bear round, fleshy, yellowish fruits that contain a large seed and have an unpleasant scent. It takes 20—35 years for maidenhair trees to reach maturity and start bearing fruits.
